Start-stop on a BMW
Recent BMW models with start-stop need an EFB or AGM battery. We match the technology your car was built with, because a conventional battery will not last in a start-stop system.

Open the bonnet of most BMW models and you will not find the battery, because it lives in the boot under the right-hand trim or floor panel. Nearly all recent cars use an AGM battery monitored by a sensor on the negative terminal. A replacement has to be registered to the car, otherwise the charging strategy still assumes the old, tired battery.

Battery brands
These brands make the sizes and technology BMW models commonly use.
Most BMW models carry the battery in the boot, with jump-start posts provided under the bonnet.
An intelligent battery sensor on the negative terminal tracks charge and age, which is why a new battery must be registered with a diagnostic tool.
Changing to a different capacity, or from flooded to AGM, requires coding as well as registration.
Some recent high-performance and electrified BMW models use a 12V lithium battery, which we confirm by model year before arranging a replacement.

FAQ
Short, direct answers. Message us if yours is not here.
Yes, on most BMW models from the mid-2000s onward the new battery should be registered. Registration tells the energy management system that a fresh battery is fitted so it charges it correctly. Skipping it can shorten the life of the new battery.
On the X5 the battery is in the boot, under the floor panel, not under the bonnet. We replace it there and use the under-bonnet posts only for jump-starting. Please empty the boot area if you can before the technician arrives.
It means the car detected the battery losing more charge than expected while parked. The cause is usually an ageing battery, and sometimes a module that stays awake. We test the battery and measure standby current to find which one it is.
Send your location, car make, model and year, plus a short description of the problem. We check battery availability and confirm the next steps.
